Substance Abuse and It's Effects

WHAT IS SUBSTANCE ABUSE?
Substance abuse is overindulgence or dependence on an addictive substance especially alcohol and drugs. 

CAUSES OF SUBSTANCE ABUSE
Some causes of substance abuse could  be caused by family history, peer groups, poor social coping skills, isolation and social environment among other things.

EFFECTS OF SUBSTANCE ABUSE

  • Substance abuse can lead to 
  • physical trauma 
  • intoxication that alters judgment, perception, attention and/ or physical control
  • depression, 
  • emotional imbalance, 
  • accidents, 
  • Death usually by overdose. 


HOW TO BE FREE OF SUBSTANCE ABUSE

  • Be willing to end your addiction.
  • Learn of the dangers associated with substance abuse.
  • Seek professional help.
  • Seek counselling to remove underlying problems.
  • Find a support group to help you in your journey to an addiction free life.
  • Have a mentor. Someone who was once an addict but is now living  free from their addiction.
  • Change or adapt your environment.
  • Find a new lease in life e.g. new hobby, religion or a pet.
  • Plan how to handle the withdraw symptoms.
  • Stop your addiction one step at a time. It is a healing process that does not happen overnight.
  • Prevent relapse by learning resistance skills that are effective for you.
