Depression and How to Face It

Depression is a condition of mental disturbance, typically with lack of energy and difficulty in maintaining concentration or interest in life. 

Depression affects how a person behaves, thinks or feels and is associated with feelings of sadness that make it difficult to get through a normal daily routine.
It is usually but not always associated with bi-polar disorder which is a mood disorder characterized by symptoms of mania and depression.

It is caused by a combination of psychological, biological, hereditary, personality, life situation, diet deficiency, mental stress and social factors. Some side effects are; Emotional and physical disability, Decreased productivity, Drug alcohol addiction, Suicidal thoughts, Low self esteem, Hopelessness, Insomnia, Anxiety disorder etc.

We need to fight depression because it negatively affects our well being. We can fight depression when we;

  • Seek healthcare
  • Psychotherapy
  • Identify and focus on activities that make you feel better
  • Think positive
  • Get more sunshine
  • Seek support from trusted friends and family
  • Be sociable despite how you feel (someone else may be going through the same thing as you)
  • Eat plenty of vitamins and proteins in a healthy balanced diet
  • Do not keep to yourself in your sadness.
  • Do something new e.g. Keep a pet
  • Avoid exposure to what is stressing you
  • Meditate on what makes you happy
  • Get surrounded by happiness
  • Change stressful conditions
  • Ask for help
  • Live a healthier lifestyle
  • Talk about it.
